3-dimentional correlative light and electron microscopy reveals that ≥ 33% of mitotic chromosomes is not chromatin, but is instead a peripheral layer that is largely derived from nucleoli. This mysterious layer is very little studied, but experiments suggest that it may have important roles in re-establishing the internal organisation of the interphase nucleus after cell division.
